Moab couldn't remember having had his dinner tonight. He asked plaintively, politely and yet with increasing incredulity for dinner. Finally he fended for himself.

Have you read "Mog the Forgetful Cat"?
No, why?
In the book Mog forgets things. Sometimes she forgets that she has been fed, sometimes she forgets that cats don't have eggs for breakfast, once she forgets that cats can't fly but most of all she forgets that she has a cat door.
When Mog forgets things sometimes her family say "Bother that cat". When she forgets she has a cat door she jumps up outside the kitchen window and meows very loudly.
One day Mog has a particularly bad day, which ends up with her outside having forgotten her cat door and forgotten she has had supper and everyone has gone to bed. Then she sees a light through the kitchen window and so she jumps up and meows very loud and very sudden and the burglar (whose light it is) is so surprised he drops the things he is taking and the noise wakes up the family and Mog is a hero.
After that they don't say "Bother that cat" as often and Mog gets an egg for breakfast every day.
