Iris's story was too spooky for Hazel because, as she explained, she cares about her little sister very much. It was almost too spooky for me for the same reason, although I felt better when I discovered it wasn't just that the mother was hurrying, snappish and oblivious, for her own reasons but they were running from a fire).
I am grateful for your additional editorial comments... or I'd have to call you straight away to sort out the rest of the context. . .
This actually reminds me of one of the more horrific comics I've ever read: Hellblazer 11 (Newcastle), which has a somewhat similar, and traumatic, event.
Way too creepy for me!... that made me shudder and I had a vision of holding T's hand
